​Kamehameha Day – Honoring a Unifying Chief and Hawaiian Legacy
Kamehameha Day, observed every year on June 11, is a state holiday in Hawaiʻi that honors King Kamehameha I, the chief who united the Hawaiian Islands into one kingdom in 1810. His leadership laid the foundation for the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi and preserved the islands’ independence during a time of global change.

King Kamehameha I (c. 1758–1819), also known as Kamehameha the Great, is remembered for his strength, wisdom, and diplomatic skill.
Kamehameha Day is celebrated across Hawaiʻi with traditions that honor the aliʻi (chiefs), culture, and values of old Hawaiʻi:
  • Floral parades featuring paʻu riders on horseback representing each island
  • Lei draping ceremonies on Kamehameha statues in Honolulu, Hilo, and Washington, D.C.
  • Cultural festivals with music, food, storytelling, and traditional crafts
  • Community gatherings that reflect pride in Hawaiian identity and history
  • Hula holds a special place in Kamehameha Day celebrations. It’s not only a performance but a way to tell stories, honor ancestors, and preserve Hawaiian culture.

Celebrating Our Featured Authors

This year, we’re proud to welcome two featured ʻOhana Hula authors whose work reflects both the rich stories of our local community and the excitement of imaginative adventure.​

North Portland Odd Fellows by David D. Scheer & Bruce Haney (published May 2024) is a fascinating look at the history and community impact of North Portland’s Odd Fellows lodges, told through rare photographs and local stories.

Annelise and the Pendragons: Liberation by Kristina Verbruggen (published May 2026)  is a fast-paced fantasy adventure following Annelise and her allies as they battle powerful enemies, uncover hidden truths, and fight for liberation.

Hawaiʻi Rage by Tori Eldridge (published May 2026) is a gripping mystery set on the Big Island, where ranger Makalani Pahukula investigates a suspicious death amid Hawaiʻi’s paniolo (cowboy) culture. Blending suspense, family secrets, and island traditions, the novel celebrates the people, history, and spirit of Hawaiʻi.


​David D. Scheer

Current hula member David D. Scheer, a local historian and storyteller with a passion for preserving North Portland history, co-authored North Portland Odd Fellows with Bruce Haney (published May 2024). Through rare photographs, historical records, and personal stories, the book highlights the lasting community impact of North Portland’s Odd Fellows lodges and the people connected to them.​


​Kristina Verbruggen

Former hula member Kristina Verbruggen, an author known for creating adventurous fantasy worlds and strong, determined characters, recently released Annelise and the Pendragons: Liberation (published May 2026). This fast-paced fantasy adventure follows Annelise and her allies as they battle powerful enemies, uncover hidden truths, and fight for freedom in a world filled with danger and mystery.

Tori Eldridge​​

Born and raised in Honolulu, bestselling author Tori Eldridge is known for her Ranger Makalani Pahukula Mysteries and Lily Wong thriller series. Drawing on her love of Hawaiʻi and its culture, her newest novel, Hawaiʻi Rage (published May 2026), follows ranger Makalani Pahukula as she investigates a suspicious death on a Big Island ranch. Set within Hawaiʻi’s rich paniolo (cowboy) traditions, the story weaves together mystery, family secrets, and island heritage in a suspenseful celebration of the people, history, and spirit of Hawaiʻi.
